5 Aspects of a Healthy Church

Hospitality:  To welcome guests warmly and generously into our church family. Hospitality also means showing respect, care and concern for all those in the community around us.  By being hospitable, Arlington UMC is providing a place for those in our church family as well as those in the community, to experience peace, joy, celebration, love, thanksgiving, belonging, acceptance and understanding.  Arlington UMC provides a wonderful array of activities for people to come together in fun and fellowship.

Study:  To pursue knowledge about God, Jesus Christ, the Bible, our community and ourselves through study.  By studying, we hope to gain a better understanding and appreciation of the world and the community around us.  In addition, through study we can experience the fullness of God and Jesus Christ.

Self-Care:  To take the time to reflect on our own lives and to nurture ourselves and those around us.  If we do not take the time to take care of ourselves, then we will not be able to show others the love that Christ has for us, nor the love we have for each other.

Stephen Ministry:   This is a one-on-one ministry provided by trained, caring, Lay Ministers who have responded to Christ's call to "carry each other's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ" (Gal. 6:2)

A Stephen Minister is: a child of God who walks beside a hurting person, a caring Christian friend who really listens, and is a lay person who has received 50 hours of training in how to provide distinctively Christian care.

A Stephen Minister is not a counselor or therapist, a problem solver or a casual visitor.

How can you be involved?  Do you have the gift of mercy, encouragement, or intercession?

   Pray for our Stephen Ministers

Help us stay sensitive to those who need caring support

Help make others aware of the support system that is available

Consider God's direction as to whether you should become a Stephen Minister

For opportunities or information, call Linda Small.

Visitation Ministry:  Making Arlington a More Caring Place

Saturday night or Sunday morning when we worship, we all help make Arlington a more caring place with a bright smile, a sincere greeting, a warm hug, and a word of encouragement.  But when a church member can't be in church, we can help others stay in touch.

We are expanding our Friendship Bundles Ministry to include other areas of caring.  This expanded ministry will be called the Visitation Ministry.  We need friendly, caring people to help others stay in touch with church activities by: visiting, sending cards, or calling those who are sick, in the hospital. nursing home, or their own home; sharing stories of things that are going on in the church; provide a ride to the doctor, church, grocery shopping or therapy; arrange a visit with Pastor Keith or the Parish Nurse; bring communion and the church bulletin, etc.  There is room for everyone, any age whether retired or working, shy or outgoing, anyone who wishes to minister to others.  The only requirement is 8 hours of training for hospital, nursing home, or homebound visits and the desire to share the same love that Jesus has bestowed upon each one of us.

We will visit others, either in teams or one-on-one, whichever way you feel comfortable.  We are here to serve Arlington and the community around us.  Please keep us in your prayers as we expand this ministry.

If you are interested in serving in any aspect (even behind the scenes) of this vital and exciting ministry, please contact Linda Small.
